Plant Biotechnology

Plant biotechnology is a set of strategies for adapting plants to particular requirements or advantages by developing novel varieties using marker-assisted selection and genetic engineering. Plant biotechnology is mainly focused on maximising crop yield in order to solve the world’s food and livestock problems. Transgenic plants with desired traits, such as abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, improved shelf life of fruits, enhanced crop yield, and so on, are developed using genetic engineering techniques. Furthermore, molecular breeding has enhanced crop growth and yield by providing powerful tools like RFLP and SSRs to select both qualitative and quantitative features as well as genotypic diversity analysis.
